“2027” offers a fresh take on the age-old “neoliberal democracy x. prison-industrial complex x. Burger King’s latest lowest-common-denominator ad campaign” combination. The poet may or may not still have the jingle that inspired it stuck in his head. (You’ve heard the one.)

 

In this daydream, I’m a domestic terrorist being hauled off to some globalist-backed kangaroo court
for having the bile to refuse a mandatory Monday Whopper™ ration. The media hounds me,
degrades me—Just who do you think you are? Do you have anything to say for your sickening dietary
choices? I’m escorted, head exposed, against the wishes of my state-appointed public defender, into
the virtual courtroom (my parents are in the virtual pews), where, after enduring scathing
prosecutorial thrusts, harrowing testimony from char-grill experts, and a lukewarm, phone-it-in
defence, I’m sentenced to ten years of hard labour in the British Columbia BK Re-Education Camp
just off of Lockheed Martin Way. And there, during my two allotted hours of freedom each day, I
toil away on a quiet opus to ease the pain. It goes:
